Now that the UK no longer owns Hong Kong is the bias in favor of British accents gone too? Is it easier for those from Canada or the US to obtain work?
I have a BA and some experience teaching in Taiwan and Greece. I do not have any TEFL certificates. Am I able to obtain teaching work, with a work permit or otherwise, with just a BA?
Will any HK schools fly you into HK? Thank you. |

There does not seem to be a bias against Americans in Hong Kong teaching, but you will need qualifications beyond just a BA and some teaching experince, even tutoring centers usually require a TEFL cert. You may be able to find some agencies or tutoring centers that will hire you based on experince but I'm not sure and do not know any; I guess you could just keep researching and checking job boards. It could be a good idea to get a TEFL cert and to become a licensed teacher in your state. |

People from the US or Canada are just as employable in HK as anyone else, and this has been the case for yonks. And even when HK was a British colony there was plenty of work for other English speakers.
With a BA and teaching experience you can certainly find work here - most easily in small private schools. As I and others have pointed out in many recent posts, for the best jobs you need QTS. However, with a BA you are eligible to apply for the HK government's Primary NET Programme, which pays much better than private tuition schools, though without QTS you would be at the lower end of the salary range. |
