Slightly off-topic but I was wondering if some of you based in Thailand can give me an idea of the accomodation situation in Thailand over the Christmas/New Year holidays.

Flights to Canada from Japan are just crazy this time around so I'm using it for an excuse to visit Thailand. Tokyo is a city where every hotel room in the city can seem booked just over the course of a regular weekend.

I'm a pretty fly by the seat of my pants traveller and I'm just wondering what I'll have in store for me if I just show up in Bangkok. I'm planning a spending a few days there max and then maybe hoping down to Ko Tao or Ko Samui.

The proble is this. I have been having a bitch of a time securing a credit card here in Japan. If my final application doesn't come through it looks like I will be showing up in Thailand with just a debit card and some travellers cheques.

How hard do you think it will be securing hotel rooms throughout Thailand over the course of the holidays.

I have absolutely no idea what Thailand is like so I would appreciate any pointers. Thanks for your time. Smile

It will be high season

Pranee Mansion by Siam cadde corner from Tokyu dept store, National Stadium skytrain stop Also further out but still good and not too expensive Watana mansion on Ratchadapesiek Huay Kwang subway stop.

Both places about 600 baht per nite

Hua Hin is a close to BKK Ocean resort-- heading South on the way to Samui etc.

I went there last time during the supposed 'high' season. Actually, it was like two days before the new year. Yes, it was quite busy, but I was able to get a place with relatively few problems. But do keep this in mind: the nicer, affordable places have already been booked. Just lower your living standards a bit and you'll have no problem. I forget what a was paying for the place I stayed in near central Bangkok but it was quite affordable, and I was on a tight budget. Furthermore, with the political unrest that's been going on in the country, the more demure travellers will decide to vacation elsewhere. That should mean better pickings for a lodging in Bangkok and other popular destinations in Thailand.
