| I'm interested in knowing how employers in KSA deal with family emergencies. Are they generally understanding if one has to go back home to tend to a loved one, or would they cancel your exit visa the minute they had wind of it? Does Saudi labor law have any provision regarding this, or are you basically a slave of your employer until your contract runs out? Have you had any experience with a Saudi employer in which they showed compassion for a family predicament? Do you have an "urgent circumstances" clause in your contract? |

Dear Mia,
When I was there, the IPA was usually quite good about family emergencies, letting teachers leave ASAP and taking care of all the necessary paperwork
quickly.
The only problem I can recall was on the death of a parent, when, on one or two occasions, the paperwork wasn't able to be completed fast enough to get the person there in time for the funeral.
The Kingdom is, after all, very big on family - so they were always very sympathetic and did their best at the IPA when emergencies arose.
Regards,
John |

Well, Teta Mia, as far as state universities are concerned, and according to university rules for non-Saudi employee, the emplyee has the right for the followings:
Article 35: The university has to offer a 10 days paid emergency holiday in a year for its employee. The 10 days will be deducted from the yearly holiday of the employee.
Article 36: The univesirty could offer an exceptional emergency non paid holiday up to one semester according to the circumstances of the employee.
Now, in groung and in practical terms, life in the magic kingdom is something else!! |

father of a collegue passed away in one asian country, and the saudi employer supported everything urgently for her travel. She returned to work in a week from her home country to resume her duties and received full salary for that month. There is also a clause stating clearly in the Contract , regarding this emergency leave.
One incident of a collegue on sick leave, her pay was deducted for the day she didnt show up at work, beacsue the doctor considered her well enought to go to work, while she was coughing like a fire engine. |
