I have wanted to teach abroad for about 4yrs now and have never been able to make the move. A bit about me: 27yr old college grad (BBA in Finance) married (wife has a BA in Communications and Certified speech teacher in Texas.) We have 3 dogs and no kids. I have a secure job with an outstanding salary (not teaching related but a supervisor) and my wife subsitute teachs (shes still looking for a full time speech teacher position locally.)
This coming year we will have paid off all of our outstanding debts and will finally be in a position to save for our move abroad, most likely Q4 2009 or 2010. We plan to do our TESOL in country when we finally nail down the target.
My question is.... If you had an established life (mortgage, cars, career...) when you moved abroad, what pushed you to make the move? It would be very easy to stay in this Dilbert-type job for enternity and keep up with the Jones. Also our dogs are our babies (thats the hardest thing for me to imagine leaving behind.) |

I brought the dog (mind you, it's just one).
The rest I was relieved to get rid of, actually, having developed allergies to STUFF. |

Cost of living is much lower, so you can get buy, we've got a flat, a car, no debts. Don't save much, but we're doing well
What pushed me to do it is that I left the US at age 19, when I graduated at age 20, it just didn't seem like I should be in the US |

I have to admit that getting rid of all the "stuff" sure does sound good. After a while it does begin to drag you down trying to aquire more and more things... A big reason I haven't nailed down where to go yet is because we are keeping the option open of bringing 2 of the dogs (little boston terriers.) My boxer would have to stay back home with my parents.
I think Latin America sounds great to start but I have to spend some time in the Far East someday for sure. |
