I'm curious. In Feb I'll be finishing my contract and I have plenty of work, but no VISA. Anyway, I'm now on a Zed that will expire in Feb.

An agency quoted me a price of 3000 for a 6 month multiple entry. There are no 12 months as of now. Now, if there are so many companies doing this it must be legal. Right? If it is legal why can't I do it myself? My girlfriend is bilingual, so there is no problems with filling out forms and whatnot.

Has anyone had the experience of doing themselves and cutting out the agency? I'm in Beijing and I'm American if that makes a difference.

I sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place. A "Z" visa is only good for 30 days. It is very doubtful that any agency can acquire another "Z" visa for you without you making a trip (at best) to HK, or (at worst) going back to the US and applying for another one there.

It certainly is legal to do it yourself. L visa, of course, is no problem. Look at the Chinese embassy web page, and they will tell you in English exactly how to get an "F" visa. After looking at the requirements, you most likely will decide to use an agency unless you know someoen with a business who can invite you. I do not know how strict or lax they are on F visas these days. Certainly more strict then years before. 3,000 doesn't sound too stiff, imagine it would cost you at least 1,000 minimum to do it yourself, haven't looked at the prices recently
