The city administration will launch on Wednesday a 10-day operation cracking down on expatriates living in Jakarta without the appropriate papers.

The main targets of this operation are the companies that employ foreign nationals, head of the City Population and Civil Registration Agency, Franky Mangatas Panjaitan, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

A team of officials from the population agency, City Manpower Agency, Immigration Office and the police will carry out the inspections, city secretary Muhayat said.

According to data held by the population agency, Jakarta is home to 49,000 foreign nationals with extendable visit permits and 5,000 permanent residents who have lived here for more than five years in a row.

Inspections will be carried out in Central Jakarta, where there are reportedly 12,045 foreign nationals, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mohammad Hatta, head of the Central Jakarta municipal population agency, said his office usually inspected foreign nationals permits once a year.

The aim of the operation is to control the city population and to detect any foreign nationals staying the city illegally, he said.

Not all foreign nationals have good intentions, he said. Some smuggle drugs and others become strippers.

He said every foreign worker must hold a passport, visitor identity card (KIP) for foreign nationals issued by the administration, a temporary stay permit (KITAS) issued by the immigration office, a working license (IKTA) from the manpower agency and a letter of self-report (SMD) from the police.

He said the officers would visit companies that employed expatriates to check the documents.
If any documents are missing, we will ask them to process them. During the inspections, we will set up a unit in the agency office on Jl. S. Parman to provide services for making documents. If any expatriates dont have a KITAS, they can be deported, he said.

He said companies could face penalties if they employed foreign nationals without all the required documentation.

Those found guilty of not adhering to the rules can face Rp 5 million in fines or 3 months in prison.

Kenneth, an Australian, said the inspection opera-tion could be a source of corruption.

i suppose all the illegal bule teachers will again be told flee the classroom to hide in the school toilets or on the roof when these officials arrive at the school.

wen i was there once, about 5 teachers had to go into hiding from the classroom during lessons and the school receptionists and telephonists had to go into the classes and pretend to be teachers until the officials left.

hilarious ! Memorable times, tho.

Just so we all know to what lengths some officials might go to extract a little 'cigarette money' (yeah, right !) from you, I got 'fined' once while driving home for having my name spelt slightly incorrectly on one of my documents. I didn't even write it !

excellent !

I hope not, the vast majority of foreign nationals are male, over 50 and pretty well physically challenged regardless of what their 20 something girlfriends try and tell them. Get the dollar signs out of your eyes girls.

The only newsworthy part of the story is that they have announced the razia in advance to the press. This happens in Jakarta every year at this time in order to extract Xmas presents from the infidels and all who employ them.

Two guys wearing cheap uniforms and massively expensive watches will show up at the school admin. If all goes well and they receive their Xmas box from the boss, they won't even see the bule. If the school doesn't play ball, they return with backup and cause as much hassle as poss. Arrests and deportations are the absolute last resort as they involve lots of paperwork and little profit.

At my age I take the insinuation that I might consider supplementing my income by stripping as a compliment.

Our school admin, has told us to bring in photocopies of KITAS and the police card this week. Just in case we get a visit.

I was caught last year at my kost'an just behind plaza semanggi/ Planet Hollywood (I now live in a house) where they came looking for people over staying on visa's etc....

They banged on every door looking for people, so I opened mine, and the guy asked could he see my passport etc.. I said sure no problem....(I have all the correct paper work so I didnt need to worry) I showed him my passport and he said...can I take this downstairs to show it to my boss... I said... (while thinking I'll never see it again if he takes it away from me...or I'll have to pay some cash to get it back) sure let me come downstairs with you.

When I got down there, I didnt realise there were TV cameraman there as well, waiting to film anyone who they might catch here illegally.. at least I got a heap of phone calls later that day with people saying they saw me on telly!!! hehehehe.

They did find a few people mainly fillipino's who visa's were almost about to expire and I think someone might have overstayed one. The people who owned the Kost'an had to visit a make shift courtroom and pay a fine of 20,000 rupiah. A waste of everyone's time!!
