Shane (owned by Saxoncourt, called Global Village in Canada) has not one, but 2 schools in downtown Vancouver. When thinking of getting into TEFL, I asked them if I could sit in some of their classes to see what the job was like-- to observe and make myself available at the teacher's request (voluntarily of course). They flatly refused--something I couldn't fathom.
What initially impressed me about their Chinese operation is the seriousness in which they conduct their application process. After teaching in China for 3 years including school management experience, , they actually turned me down (for a teacher's job in favor of other applicants! My reaction? Wow, this is the school to work for!!! After leaving New Oriental to work for the slightly better-managed Dell English. in Beijing, I briefly visited one of their schools. I do remember seeing actual resource materials (not just course books) in their teachers' room -- a rarity in China -- but somehow, I wasn't as impressed as I'd thought I'd be. |
