I am writing this post to let people know what an unforgettable time i had teaching in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. What made it so incredible was not the country or the city, but the sincere support and wonderful personalities of the school staff. During my time there, i met lots of foreigners teaching in other schools in the city, but not one of them half as happy to go to work as i have been. I was teaching to motivated children in an environment where everything was made to support my needs as a teacher, and as a foreign visitor. Nyamsuren, the woman who runs the school, happily offers accomodation right in the middle of the city and a minute away from her school. I lived there with her family and felt totally free, totally supported, and like a member of her family. Some week ends were spent with Nyamsuren exploring the Mongolian countryside in her car, all this because she cares for her teachers and genuinly wants them to go home with a smile. I cannot recommend this school more, it is called Success and is located near the UB tower. Write to me if you need any more details or if you'd like to see some pictures

Hi Christophe,
That sounds really interesting; I've heard some really good things about living/travelling in Mongolia.
Can I ask you a quick question: what is the usual selection criteria for a TEFL position in Ulaanbaatar? I ask because when I'll be looking for work in Asia, I'll be a fairly inexperienced & underqualified teacher (no degree or much experience + CELTA qualification).
If you had any info that could help me, it'd be really appreciated,
Cheers,
M |

Hi M and sorry for this delayed reply. My experience teaching in developing countries is that you can start with little or no experience, and no diplomas will be asked from you. Looking 'Western' and speaking decent English is enough to get a job. I had no qualification when i taught in Mongolia and i still have a bit of a French accent. I hope this helps. All the best with your travel plans |

Thanks for sharing your experience Christophe. My wife is from UB and I'm hoping to move there this summer. I would love to hear more info about your employer and see some pictures. How is the pay at the Success school? Do you have any contact info for them? I'm more concerned with working for a kind, supportive boss than getting the highest pay at this point. From what I've read on this forum, that's not always an easy task in Ulaanbaatar.
Take care,
Hutch |

Sain yy Christophe,
Since I don't have enough posts to "initiate contact via email/pm," could you pm me regarding details on Success and any other opportunities you may be aware of in Mongolia. I'm former Peace Corps MNG and a teacher, weighing options of returning.
