I came across this news tidbit. It mentions the connection between girls's attendance at schools with the state of a country's development.

One thought that immediately pops to mind is -

Wouldn't it be nice if the Saudis read this, believed it and actually acted on it? You can't compete in the international market these days if half your work force is uneducated / unemployable. Of course, some other countries, Pakistan, Bangledesh, etc., had better pay heed to it, as well.

Yeah, I'm not convinced by the various reasons for keeping the (wo)man down.
