Hello,
My husband and I are currently teaching in China and will be staying for one more year. However, we were thinking of looking to the Middle East to teach in a year or two to save some money. Can you please give me some advice on where to look for jobs and what the pay would be for someone with our experience.
I have a BA in English and my husband has a BA in History. We will have taught English in China for 2 years at the same school and we both have our TEFL.
What pay would we be looking at?
Are there many openings for Elementary teaching positions?
Where should I start looking?
Thanks for any advice or help that you have!

Pay varies greatly by country in the Middle East... with the Gulf being the highest. Do either of you have a teaching certificate from your home country? Is your TEFL cert one that provided actual supervised classroom teaching (like the CELTA)?

Hi Cary...
I just noticed your location. Zhengzhou... What school have you been teaching for?
One of the things you need to realize about the gulf is that the best paying jobs usually require several things.
1. An MA in applied linguistics/TESL/TEFL/TESOL
2. A minimum of three years experience.
The second tier jobs are usually teaching at the international grade schools, but they almost always require a fully accredited teaching certificate from your home country. So just the BA/BS degree w/out a teaching certificate won't get you much.
That leaves you the local schools and language institutes which have many different levels of pay but most of them aren't that great.
If you have a TEFL cert that is equal to a CELTA, you can get higher pay, but you might still find it better off to stay in Zhengzhou (where the pay is much lower, but the cost of living is WAY lower.)
We lived for 2 years in Zhengzhou, and though we weren't rich, we did have a very good life due to how cheap everything was.
If you have any UAE specific questions feel free to PM me. |
