Many years ago, in a galaxy far, far away - yup, I was, '63 to '67. So many people in this field have been in the Peace Corps; I never was, I was, however, in the War Corps. And believe me, the Peace Corps is far, far better, all-around.

Glad you decided not to use that permission. For my money, "Full Metal Jacket" is the best movie I've ever seen about Viet-Nam. But then, Kubrick was a genius. My only quibble is that the Drill Instructor was too much of a softie.

Dear fat_chris,
"Apocalypse Now" is, of course, Conrad's "Heart of Darkness " transplanted to Vietnam. And since that book is a masterpiece, well, the movie can't be all bad - great music ( "The Ride of the Valkyries" ) and some fine acting. But, in my opinion, more about the "general nature of evil and human fallibiity " than about Vietnam ( in the same way that Conrad's book wasn't really about the Congo - or even about Africa ) . And "Platoon?" - I'd say it was nothing more or less than a run-of-the-mill Hollywood formula "war movie" - and if you want that sort of thing, well, "We Were Soldiers Once and Young" does it much better. But my special animus has to be reserved for what I consider to be the worst travesty of all, that ridiculous film called, "The Deer Hunter", Hollywood trash, from start to finish. Everyone had their own Vietnam, though, so it's highly likely that others who were there would disagree - and have their own opinions. But no movie, even by a genius such as Kubrick, is ever going to capture the reality.

Well, it's hard to tell - from a distance. But scot47 DOES seem to have most, if not all, of the qualities essential to the making of a "good" D.I.
He may not, however, be psychopathic enough - yet. A few more years in the Kingdom, though, could remedy that.
