Hello,
I'm a 1st year Secondary Business and Computers teacher. My girlfriend and I would like to try teaching overseas during the 2010/2011 school year. Of course, we'd want to be able to live together while abroad.
Do you think we'd both be able to secure teaching jobs in the same locale? Brazil and Costa Rica are probably at the top of the list right now.
She's not currently licensed to teach, but has a degree in Biology and Philosophy. I'm 1/2 way done with an MBA. We'll be working on learning Spanish and getting our certifications to teach abroad over the next year (though we're not sure which program we'll do yet). English is our first language. We're serious about making this happen, so any help you can offer will definitely be appreciated

YOu could, try www.ibo.org or www.tes.co.uk
Although your girlfriend might have a harder time finding a job, she could always work at a language institute.
For intl schools, it's usually like this
married teaching couples, licensed to teach
single teachers
married, only one is a licensed teacher
YOu'd fall in the second category since you've not married. But you'd get good housing, salary and benefits, that if she didn't work, you'd both still have enough to live off of. Her visa might be an issue though. |

Wow. That's encouraging. I wouldn't have thought that I could support us both based on my salary alone. I've heard that international schools pay better, than language institutes but that's great to hear.
The visa thing seems to be a concern in a lot of places. Right now, we're only looking at going down for one school year. Of course, if we like it we'll probably want to stay longer. I guess at this point, just getting the visa clearance (for both of us) for the first year would be the chief concern.
Do you have to have a CELTA to teach at intl schools? It seems like CELTA is most recognized, but I also have to keep working here and can't get away this summer to complete it. I was planning on getting my 100-200 hour online cert. What do you think about that? |
