Slightly off-topic thread but I was just curious as to how many of us like to do a little video gaming on the site when we're not being serious teachers? I just recently discovered a forum for gamers in Japan called Gajin Gamer. This has been a godsend for me since this is the only other Japan based forum that I visit and (naturally) the conversation is more focused on teaching and finding jobs and whatnot. Anyways if you're a gamer then I highly recommend you check it out as there's all sorts of video game talk along with the sort of stuff we generally get into here as well, such as the lack of insulation in Japanese houses. I hope I haven't stepped on any toes with this thread. I just would love to talk about games with you guys but I know we can't have these forums filled up with video game threads. |

I have been, and am sometimes gamer, but I stick strictly with PC games as I prefer role-playing and strategy games. Recently I can't play them as my pc has some problem with recognizing my game CDs. It also depnds on how busy I am.
I tend to discuss games at specific game sites rather than at general ones like the one you posted a link to. I'm sure there are other players here. I personally have been looking for ways to teach a class using pc games, but as yet haven't found any uni interested in that concept. |

Oh believe me, I do too. I have my regular standby's as well but sometimes it is nice to discuss stuff with people who are in the same situation as you (like playing Rock Band 2 in a Japanese apartment building) |

Yup, definitely experienced that... Courtesy prompted me to get drum silencers too, which.. have very little effect. Ah, well. |

The, ahh, moral fibre of Japanese pc games may make that a difficult task. |

Interesting site! I'm not in Japan now but I've bookmarked it.
I've talked a couple of students into buying English games for their DS Lites--why not do extensive reading via an RPG? Some of them are pretty text-heavy! DS Lites are region-free, so there's no investment or hacking involved. I've only played a couple of Japanese games on it myself. Darned hard when there's no furigana. |

Those TOEIC booster games are popular with my students, there's a company that whacks out edutainment based stuff once a week it seems. I tried to tell them to use it as an aid rather than a crutch though and... fairly low scores abounded when the test didn't feature the handful of questions on the cart. I do hear good things about English of the Dead though. |

There are a few students that I have that have played Shogun in English. I think beyond setting up the building and economic activity in the provinces, moving your men should be similar to the English verion.
I have always been interested in using 'Capitalism' as a business sim, not only for teaching business concepts, but also for teaching English (they currently use the program as part of some MBA programs).

I have had only problems with my wife as some of the background game music she finds annoying. Makes playing 'Thief the Metal Age' a bit challenging as that game often requires moving as quietly as possible (unless you play it as assassin as I do sometimes ). |
