Hello, I'm hoping to start a graduate degree in September, but am currently unemployed and kicking my heels. I was wondering if anyone would recommend teaching in Japan until late summer? I'm British, qualified, and with 2 years TEFL experience in China. Would I be able to get a visa for a 6 month contract, and would I at least break even? I'm more interested in seeing what Japan is like and having a bit of an adventure than making pots of money. I'd be trying to get a job in Kyoto, if possible. Any replies would be gratefully received!

You might find it hard to get a six month contract I think, most teaching jobs will want you to commit to a year. If you have business teaching experience, you might have some luck getting PT clients together, or you could go a shorter twelve week route with someone like Westgate.

Vast majority of contracts are for 12 months.

What does "qualified" mean? Work visa requires a BA or BS degree in any subject, or 3 years of teaching experience. Not much in the way of qualifications, but a TEFL certificate alone is not enough.

Brits, of course, could get working holiday visas if they meet the requirements.

6 months? See if Westgate Corporation has something in your time frame, but otherwise, I wouldn't count on it. You'd barely break even on setup costs by then. If you are already "kicking your heels" in unemployment, that may not make financial sense.
