I am moving to Vietnam to teach at the start of February. I need some REAL suggestions (instead of just Lonely Planet advice) on guest houses near the school (Dist.1) for potential long term (6 month) living. Super important to me:

1) WiFi Internet (free)
2) A/C

Any suggestions on particular places that are clean/cheap?? Let me know what else is offered at that particular guest house.
Any guest houses that are awful and I should be wary of??
Thanks!

i recommend Madame Cucs, 184 Cong Quynh, district 1. i stayed there for a a month when i first moved here. very friendly service, air con and free wi fi. i paid $15 per night, which is pretty steep compared to other guest houses in the area, but well worth it. And breakfast and dinner included aswell.

If you live in a guesthouse you will be depressed all the time. Instead, look for a housing share. If you're gonna stay 6 months, you might as well make some friends and have a much more comfortable experience. Craigslist is good, also look for flyers at places like Chi's Cafe or Le Pub in Pham Ngu Lao (backpacker district). Plenty of teachers have houses and need to fill one room. You'll be sooo much better off!

Before you find that though, just go into one of the mazes of alleyways in Pham Ngu Lao. Most people I know who come by themselves pay $5-6/night in a smaller alleyway guesthouse. I paid $8/night for a double, split between two people. You might have to pay a bit more for Wifi or A/C but these days you definitely DON'T need A/C in HCMC... it's cooler these days. Get off the main streets (Bui Vien and Pham Ngu Lao) and into the alleyways and you'll find the best prices.
