I am a 48 year old American teacher. I have a bachelors degree in elementary education, a TESOL certificate, and five years experience (grades 4- 12) in the states. I also have a Filipina fiancee that lives and works in Hong Kong. I have not taught since 2007.
My question is that should I need to move to Asia to marry my fiancee, where would my qualifications most likely get me a job, and would she be allowed to stay there with me? |

Hi there,
With your Bachelor degree in education you should be able to teach in various international schools including Hong Kong & Phillipines. Malaysia has a few jobs at the moment too. Your TESOL cert and experience will give you the advantage over other applicants.
Unless you want to teach adults specifically? Jobs in international school tend to pay better and the hours are more regular. I brought my non working spouse in as a dependant to Turkey and the school applied for residence for all of us.
I don't know about your fiance with residence etc. It would help if you were married already then it is a lot easier for you to sponsor her into a country once you have a job.
It is a great time of year to look for jobs in international schools!
Hope this is of some help to you. |

Hong Kong! With your quals and experience you stand a good chance of getting a job on the HK Government Primary NET programme. If your fiancee is already here, why look anywhere else? |

Actually, in HK at least, many international schools have now adopted the Education Bureaus master pay scale, which is here:
http://www.csb.gov.hk/english/admin/pay/42.html
I do not think teachers can go beyond point 40 (HK$66,060 a month). It is still fairly lucrative, of course, but nothing like it used to be.
Also, unlike NETs on the EDB NET schemes, many teachers at international schools in HK no longer receive housing allowance, whereas NETs receive a monthly special allowance of HK$13,000 in addition to their basic salary. |
