Wondering if anyone can recommend a good place to change money in good 'ol Warsaw? I've got about $3k to turn into pln and I'm wondering about which place will give me the best rate for that sum of Yankee dollars.

to be honest, your best bet is to go round the kantors (you can see some of their prices online http://www.google.pl/search?hl=pl&q=kantor+warszawa&btnG=Szukaj+w+Google&lr=&aq=f&oq=) and see what they offer.
They seems to be trading anywhere between 2.90 and 2.95
www.xe.com/ucc will give you the live market exchange rate for dollar to zlot. The live rate at the time of writing is 2.96
The nbp's exchange rate archive shows that the dollar is trading at it's highest for over a year and the nbp's exchange rate table for the 8th is here:
http://www.nbp.pl/Kursy/TabArchEn.aspx?n=a005z090108
When I changed my money i used various different kantors and often found the ones who display there prices on a board outside which were fixed for the day were better then the ones who could change their rates. A kantor also doesn't charge commission, I'm not sure if the nbp would or not. |

I've always found Conti to be the best in Warsaw.
Find them at Al. Jana Pawa II 46/48 (near corner with Al. Solidarności), pav. No. 12. tel. 0-22 635-80-72, 636-82-55
Right now they are buying at 2.96 and selling at 3.00. But if you have $3000 to sell, you could probably negotiate a slightly better rate, say 2.97 or perhaps 2.975. Give them a call and ask. They're open 24/7. |

There is a place in Kangurek store in Ursynow where I've gotten pretty good rates. It's on the corner of Romera and KEN - second floor. |

I ended up going down to Conti. They quoted me at 2.97 over the phone, but when I got there the same guy (I could recognize his voice) said he'd buy my dollars for 2.95pln. I protested and said "I just called and was quoted at 2.97" and he rolled over instantly, said "okay" and bought my dollars for 3.97pln.
Very strange transaction. I'm still trying to figure the Polish out? I completely expected him to protest my 2.97 claim, but he didn't put up any resistance at all. So then I said, since the dollar is actually at 3.00pln right now, and I'm changing a good chunk of cash, how about 2.975 and he said "no" and I could tell he wouldn't budge at all, just by the way he said it.
Weird. It was a decent exchange though. |
