Hey, I have a might-be job on the line starting around mid-May. Are there any jobs in cities outside of Bangkok for teaching? Also I have a couple of other questions: Are English books easy to get? To anyone who has lived in Korea, is there a book store akin to whatthebook.com? Also I have heard that it is hard to send money to an out-of-contry bank acount. Is there any turth to that? Any help would be greatful.

I've never heard anyone having any trouble sending money out of the country.

Plenty of teaching jobs outside of Bangkok. BTW, most people in Thailand don't live in BKK. Thailand's population is about 75 million. Bangkok's population is 10-15 million. Most of the better paying jobs are in BKK though.

I teach in the south of Thailand and I think there are many schools outside of BKK in need of teachers. Most schools pay less than those in BKK though and and seem to be hiring filipinos. I buy all my English books at the Chulalongkorn bookstore and am not sure of any websites. Chula seems to have a wide selection and can order any books if they don't have the one you want on hand. I too had some difficulties sending money to the US. Surprisingly, many banks do not offer this service except for Siam Commercial and.... (forget). It's really not worth it unless you are sending a large amount as they charge rather high commission fees. I have since resorted to using Western Union. Good Luck!!

For any other English books, any Asia books bookstore works. At most major malls. Alos there is a good one that has second hand stuff (not the philoshy, buddisht, travel crap in all the Khao san bookstores) that is on Sukumvit Road (around soi 9-13 or so).

For work outside of Bangkok, check out www.ajarn.com (although they mostly have Bangkok listings, they do have some outside) or do your own leg work and visit places and see schools on your own time or go with a recruiter. MediaKids is ok for new teachers and outside Bangkok locations. Also there is AYC, JP and a few others. Quite obvioulsy they pay less than in Bangkok, but cost of living in cheaper as well. Some schools are hiring more Filipinos because they cant find native speakers. Most would hire a native speaker if they could find a good one.

As for sending money home. Bank fees for international tranfers used to be relatively cheap here 2-3 years ago (500 baht) . they have recently raised them to what I think is the int'l standard. About $30 per transfer. Western Union is about the same cost if you are sending about $1000. Western Union prices vary on the amount of money you are sending, but bank transers are a flat rate. So for large amounts go with the bank, but smaller amounts (less than $1000) Western Union. Oh and almost all banks can do International transfers. Gusto102, if you are outside of Bangkok, you might have problems because they dont know how to do it properly. But Ive done transers with at least 3 different banks (Siam Comm, Ayuthaya, Bangkok Bank). Just make sure you have your bank address, account number and swift code or transfer code (ask your bank).

I just did a bank transfer with Ayuthaya today to an account in Britain. It was 1700 baht (47 US dollars) to send any amount. ouch

I think other banks charge about the same.

Well that may be true in some cases. personally I think I am preety good at my job. My Education degree, CELTA and 5+ years expererience is pretty good too. Some people don't just look at salary when looking for work. By all means go sweat it out in a Korean Hagwon and make good money. Live in a compound in Saudi Arabia and make great money. Not the life for me thank you. or for many of the "good" teachers I know here in Thailand.
