|
|
Howdy,
I am seriously considering moving from the U.S. to teach in Harbin, China. I have a B.S. in Business Administration and some teaching experience in preparing reborn students for their high school equivalency tests; but, I have yet to receive any kind of English-teaching credential and would like to pursue the CELTA.
To complete this program in the U.S., I would have to pay nearly twice as much (when considering program fees and housing) as I would if I were to complete the Language Link program in Beijing. However, I am aware that I should absolutely have a Z-visa when I enter China.
My problem boils down to this:
Would it be possible (or even Kosher) to receive Z-visa sponsorship from an employer in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province PRIOR TO working through the Beijing CELTA program? Please note that I would be LIVING IN A DIFFERENT PROVINCE for a month before even beginning work and living in Harbin.
The website for Language Link Beijing doesn't list any scheduled CELTA classes or fees, but cactustefl.com had these listed:
4 weeks course starting 29/12/2008 for $1,488
4 weeks course starting 04/05/2009 for $1,488
4 weeks course starting 29/06/2009 for $1,488
Any suggestions as to how I might best go about this would be gratefully appreciated. I could do the program in the U.S., but since I'm planning on going to China anyways, I figured I'd ask the experts so that I can make Harbin a reality for me within the foreseeable future.
Sincerest regards,
Jordan

You should do some research into the Z visa. Once it has been issued it is valid for 1 year BUT after entering China you have only 30 days to start the process of applying for the Foreign Experts Certificate and applying for a Residence Permit.
In your situation this is not enough time. |

Well if you are planning on staying in Harbin and the same school for a couple of years you could always finish one year and then during the summer go to Beijing and do the CELTA. Summer holidays are around 6 or 7 weeks so you would have plenty of time to do the CELTA. Or if you are planning on beginning in February/March you can complete one semester then over the summer do the CELTA. |

If you are gong to Harbin, why don't you try Will-Excel (or something like that)...they are Harbin-based and offered either a TESOL or CELTA (I am not sure which) and they also offer job placement, or so I understand. I believe the cost may be less than that mentioned in a previous post.
I don't know about the vagaries of the visa situation however in this case. |

I studied with Will-Excel back when they were brand new. They're still going strong.
The course only requires $200 down. All other tuition fees are paid for by your employer, also known as your sponsor school.
In the end you actually graduate with a diploma, as compared to a certificate.
You can find all of the particulars about their course from their website: http://www.willexcel.com/TESOL/main.htm |

Will-Excel will ensure that you get a work visa within the first few weeks of arrival. When and who does it depends on who your sponsor school is.
The guys running Will-Excel (all expats, btw), have very strict standards when it comes to selecting sponsor schools, and being able to provide a visa, as well as private accommodation, health insurance, etc is all necessary to be accepted as a sponsor school.
Good luck in Harbin. You'll love it there! |

I thought it wasn't possible to change visa once inside China, or at least not advised, wouldn't this mean arriving on a tourist visa? |

'Will-Excel' most certainly do not offer the CELTA. And their TESOL 'certificate' is in-house and is unrecognised by anyone but themselves. |
