Hello,
I was wondering if its possiable to teach in Tawain(or get a visa) with a college diploma. I think I have read this somewhere before. I am going to get my Celta and I was going to do a diploma with the open university should it be possiable to teach in Tawain. |

There's plenty of threads about this so check out this site for more info. As you will find, a degree is a must to be in Taiwan legally. |

After Forest's advice I would dig a little further. I thought a diploma and a TEFL are also ok, however distance degrees are not ok, so Open University may well be a problem.
Do a search, there are loads of threads on it. |

Anything acquired through distance learning will at present cause problems if looking for work in Taiwan. Basically, as I understand it, they are just not valid on the island. |

Just as a follow up, hasn't Scott Sommers on his weblog put something about how to find work in TEFL in Taiwan, and qualifications needed? |

Well I have indeed seen threads on here before regarding College Diplomas vs. University Degrees. Yeah. I'm aware of the fact that most "distance" degrees are not accepted in Taiwan.
But I do think that some distance degrees are. For instance, I do know for a fact that a degree from Athabasca University will be accepted in Taiwan. Whether it's distance or on campus.
College diploma? Well I have also read that if you have a 2 year college diploma in one hand and a TESOL certification in the other, you can legally work in Taiwan. Now this may not be true anymore. I'm sure in this thread, someone will definitely confirm it for sure.
Only question which I have been wondering was this:
If I have a college diploma (2 year) in "General Studies", would that be enough to qualify me for a visa in Taiwan? I already have a TESOL certification. But the reason I ask this question is because I wasn't sure if a diploma in "General Studies" would be accepted. But any response would be appreciated. I'll search the threads deeper |

I would go to Scott Sommer's website and email him if you have problems. He talks a lot about regulations, the Ministry of Ed., etc., so get onto him. Check out Michael Turton's website on teaching in Taiwan too. Michael is a fountain of info on life in Taiwan should you be able to get here. |

I'm sorry Forest but this is absolutely untrue.
I'll address my statement; it may be true as a preferred level of education but as an accepted level of education an associate diploma from a University PLUS a Tesl cert is widely accepted for non-public school or university teaching (i.e buxibans) positions.
I know this to be fact because my wife has the diploma plus Tesl and is working full time with a school sponsored ARC.
As probably the largest and most recognised chain school on the island I reckon Hess must have their facts straight and this is posted on their website:
Minimum Education Requirements
Teachers must have one of the following qualifications to meet the Taiwanese Bureau of Education's minimum educational requirement:
A Bachelor's degree in any discipline OR
An Associate's degree with a TEFL / TESOL Certificate.
More:
From Buxiban.com
2. Meet the following minimum education requirements:
a) Bachelor's degree or above in any discipline from a tertiary institution recognized by the Taiwan government; or
b) An associate's diploma plus a TEFL / TESOL certification. |
