I can't work in the EU. What non-EU city

*"feels" European

*legally hires Americans & other foreigners to teach English

*is physically comfortable: most housing is decent; public spaces are not choked with pollution (I can handle some: I've lived in some major industrial cities), are physically mostly safe (of course every place has some crime); some parks and other green spaces; pleasant street life; active civic life

*is cosmopolitan: not too big a deal to buy foreign groceries, see foreign movies, buy foreign books & periodicals (I know everything's online: I like to shop.)

*good public transportation, both within town & into/out of the city

Does any city come close? Thanks! Smile

Zurich? Istanbul? Somewhere in Croatia?

Can't comment on employment opportunities for USians though.

Lviv, Kyiv and Odessa fit many of your criteria in varying levels. Lviv is the most "Euro" looking; Kyiv has the shopping; Odessa. Well, Odessa's just loads of fun.
I'm very biased, but I think Lviv would fit the best (esp. considering you can hop over to Poland cheaply).
Good luck!

Can definitely recommend Lviv as an alternative to Western European and Central European teaching location.
Istanbul is also a great location, with great food and great people but Lviv is still a relatively well-kept secret and you won't find hordes of other teachers there with you.
