|
|
Hello everybody.
I was advised to post this in the China Forum, although I am a newbie still. I would like to know anything you think might be useful for the purposes of finding work and accommodation in Shanghai. I will be arriving with neither.
Which is a good / cheap area to stay in in the 'seacrh' period?
Where is a good area for school / accommodation availability?
How much do you think I would need in startup costs (assuming I am successful in my hunt, say, within the first two months)?
What sort of hours do different types of school require you to work?
Will a CELTA teach me important lessons, or could I learn them just as well from teacher's books? I have startup funds, but they are not unlimited.
Thanks,
Jasper. |

You can find a job/work on the above link.
Finding an apartment is a piece of cake.
Live near a subway station, preferably in an area where the locals don't stare at you all the time.
$2000 should be enough to get you going as long as you avoid Maoming Lu.
Good luck. |
Good God, if that link gets posted here again I'll laugh. There must be hundreds of people applying for the two or three crappy jobs listed there each month.
If you want advice, send me a message and I'll help. Too many trolls here and if I list some schools you can count on some of the people here emailing their resumes within seconds. |

Hmmm. Shouldn't you be a Xuxu? (or a sweet baba to some mongolians working the Mao?) |

Well, I tried that, as you well know. Had to give it up as it burnt holes in my tights.
Hey, I know this a really wacky idea, but why don't you offer some help to the original poster. I know Thats Shanghai gets more hits than it deserves, but it's a start. Some substantial tips, Jenny, whaddya think? |

When I was teaching I found some pretty good work on 'That's'. I think it's a good starting point.
Anyone with half a clue could assess which jobs are going to be rubbish by doing a bit of research. Sure, many of the jobs are no good. But a newbie has to start somewhere.
Oh, Sonic. Never accept a full-time position anywhere. Ever. No matter how much they dress it up.
Freelance.

Freelance.
You have a nice day too, Jen. |

Hi everybody,
I am actually using my wife's password here but I had to respond. Sonic, if you are looking for work in Shanghai, That's website is not as bad as Jen2003 says. I am working at a great school here in Shanghai, great pay, great management, great hours and guess how I found this job.... by looking on That's website.
Jen, by reading your other posts, I wasn't really surprised by the "scraps" comment, but I was offended. Ease up on us peasant folk, would ya.
Cheers.

There are rarely any 'good' jobs advertized in That's magazine. If you found one, good for you.
Seems there's a real conspiracy to attack anything I write (due to jealousy).
There are a lot of people interested in teaching in China. I hope they understand what is really going on here and avoid bad advice (which is about 90% of what is written here). |

Give us some examples of 'good jobs' in the latest edition of Thats.
I have never seen a 'great' school advertized there. |

I got some work off 'Thats' correcting reports for a company in Pudong. They would email me the report, I'd guess how long it would take me to do it, send them a quote and that would be that. However, the reports were not too badly written and it would often take me 15 minutes to check it as opposed to the hour or two that I'd quoted. Of course, I never let on to the company!!
I think that many schools that advertise on 'Thats' are in desperate need of a teacher - 'Wanted. One teacher yesterday' kind of thing. Then the ball's in your court. Also if you're freelancing, which I was, you can select all the work within spitting distance of your house. The last year I was teaching I never had to take the subway - just a ten minute stroll every time.
Jen's a bit harsh with 'That's' (but then she's a bit harsh with all of us too ), but check it out. Good for finding an apartment without using an agent. |

I picked up a nice "scrap" in Thats over summer. 60 hours of TOEIC instruction @ 250 an hour, so that's a cool Y15,000 I got that those who are too proud to look didn't make.
If you've got time up your sleeve, it doesn't hurt to look. |

I've got the current edition right here. Considering how many times I've seen That's magazine praised as a resource her by MTN, Minghang Oz and FreakyDavey, it's really sad. Did you guys clip that picture of the Hainan xiao jie on your walls?
An international school in Guangzhou paying 6,000-10,000/month (for an international school with the parents paying thousans of U.S. dollars per term ) A kindy looking for a female teacher. Another looking for a female teacher. One more...zzzz. That's it. Online? Some other mediocre positions.
Some EFL bible!!
