Hi
Bit of background before the question:
5 years Tefl experience overseas and in UK, BA but not in English, almost finished writing a Tefl book and will try to get it published, speak another language.
So, my wife and I would like to try our luck in Qatar.
We'll try to live the monk life, rarely venturing out of our appartment, if only to go to a restaurant or possible sporting activity.
Aim is to save 12,000/$16,500 in the course of a year.
Is this feasible?
Many thanks. |

Perhaps, you should post this on the Qatar site.
In the UAE, you generally need a degree in the subject that you teach, either linguistics or TESOL. |

In the UAE (which is not qatar) you generally need the Masters degree (TESL, TESOL, Applied linguistics, etc) and 3 years teaching experience to get the best jobs, or you need to be a certified teacher with experience to get the international schools.
Good luck though. |

The poster has posted this in about 10 different threads and apparently forgot to edit the proper country here.
With only an unrelated BA and 5 years of teaching experience, the Gulf isn't the place. At least get a CELTA or DELTA and that would help get into the entry level jobs. The jobs that hire with the lowest credentials tend to be in Saudi Arabia.
The problem in the Gulf is that those that will hire you are very likely those that you wouldn't want to work for.

I am in Doha now. Not an English ESL teasher. However, there are opportunitipes available. possible downsides = Doha has not been "hit" as hard as Dubai in real estate ( at least on paper).
a lot of what you read is PR - in other words " keep the suckers rolling in".
can you find a job with your qualifications? Yes, would you want it probably not. Ask a specific question abouat a speicific employer you'll get a better response. |

Easy, you'll manage it
But if you have some work experience, why not apply for a proper job and you'll make twice the salary. There are many many many expat positions in Qatar/UAE.
If you are planning to live like a monk then you are going to Qatar/ UAE for a money collection, why not spend your year here working working working and making proper lolly |

Hey
Cheers for the advice.
I have got the old CELTA, but looking at the job sites I guess the MA is a must for the best jobs. I think i might look more into Qatar or Oman. |
