Hiyas,
I've got a hankering for some dim sum. I even dreamt about it, and just saw Bourdain's offering on Hong Kong, and now I'm dying for it even more. Can I get it in DF?
Cheers,

aaaahhhh the joys of dim sum! Ive only had it in New York City and San Francisco. Dont know of anyplace in the DF... heck the Chinese food pickings here are slim. I know there are these Chinese-Mexican little places but lets get real. After the Mexican goverment kicked out the Chinese at the end of the 19th century, this country lost a lot! The few that were left were mixed and assimilated without Mexico assimilating what the Chinese had to offer.
I make my own potstickers and got a freezer ful right now (and no you can come over!) I have found some decent Asian groceries. One in Zona Rosa (the Korean neighborhood, hope they dont get kicked out!) and interestingly enough a good supermarket at the southern end of Eje Central/Lazaro Cardenas on Div del Norte. You can always go to one of these places and pick up some frozen potstickers and steamed buns to cook at home. Wont be the same but might take the edge off of the antojo! |

There is an oriental supermarket on San Luis Potos, a short distance turning right from Monterrey, in Col. Roma Norte. I had a Japanese student in the nearby Star Mdica Clinic who uses it, so it must be good! I've never been in, but he told me that it specializes in Japanese, but also has other oriental food. |

I know they serve dim sum at Zhen Shangai (Presidente Intercontinental), though I have never eaten there.
True and good oriental food can be found in Mexico City, albeit not cheap. Some pointers:
Chinese: Blossom (http://www.restaurante-blossom.com), Hunan (Http://www.hunan.com.mx), Ka Won Seng (Albino Garcia 362, Metro Viaducto)
Japanese: Teppan Yaki Taro (Universidad 1861), Benkay (Hotel Nikko)
I haven't tried, but read about these other two: Biwon (Korean, on Florencia, Zona Rosa), Tandoor (Indian, on Coprnico, Anzures), and Thai Gardens (on Caldern de la Barca, Polanco). The oriental super mentioned above is called Mi Kasa, and it's fairly good. There's another important venue for those living in the southern area of town: Super Oriental, on Divisin del Norte (near Churubusco). |

Fabulous! Thanks!
I go to Mi Kasa pretty regularly, and like the little outdoor restaurant they have on weekends, but I like dim sum not only for the food but the atmosphere too, so maybe I'll try this Zhen Shangai? Wonder how much it is. |

Hmm.. Just looked at the Zhen Shangai website.. Both fancy and schmancy.. Guess I'll just have to make my own at home and imagine I'm somewhere hot, humid, incredibly noisy and surrounded by those fantastic trolleys full of delight. |

From my repetoire of true stories I tell my students...
I grew up in NJ near NYC. Once I had cousins of mine visiting me from North Carolina (this is way back in the mid 80's when I was in college). Being a good hostess and tour guide, we went to NYC and one of the things on my to do list was to go to eat dim sum. Back then it was only available on Sundays for some reason. The restaurant I had known was closed so I looked up another, also in Chinatown.
Now I have to admit I was showing off a bit for my "country bumpkin" cousins. So we are in the restaurant and Im showing off my knowledge of dim sum. As we are eating, one of the carts comes up to us being pushed but a lady who must have been 150 years old (I could be exaggering a bit) shuffling slowly. She stops at our table and I see a dish with little red bits of meat on it so I point to it. She says in broken halting English "no no no its its its chicken... its chicken" I shrug and point to it again and again she tries to warn me but without sucess. So she gives up and hands me the plate.
I take the first morsel with my chopsticks and put it in my mouth... tastes like chicken but its all skin and bone. I eat it figuring I got a bad piece. Second morsel... same thing. Huh.... Third morsel, this time its skin and an identifiable piece of bone... something akin to a finger bone... and my face drops as I realize what I have been eating (chicken feet)!
Worst/best part was that as soon as my face dropped, the manager of the restaurant, who had been watching the whole time, erupts in a fit of laughter.... I did the only thing I could do, smile sheepishly and nod acknowledgement to him. After all the lady did try to warn me as best she could, she just didnt know the word "feet".
Makes for a good story! |
