A number of colleagues of mine could not agree on the present situation regarding the taxation of UK residents. One suggested that if you are employed by a non-British company in Kuwait, UK taxation does not apply. Others thought that you were exempt from UK taxation provided you did not spend more than 90 days in the UK in any year the onus being on you to prove this. Others claimed that the UK government is out to change the rules to make expats liable for taxation. Can anyone clarify the present situation?

If you work in Kuwait for a Non British Co, you are not required to pay UK tax.

If you work in Kuwait for a British Co, you are still not required to pay UK tax, you would be paid via on an overseas contract.

If you are not in the UK for more than 90 days per year and are resident abroard, you can claim non-resident status and thus receive gross interest in savings and investements. This is achieeved by simply signing a declaration, you are not required to provide proof.

As for UK nationals, working abroard and being expected to pay tax, there are no official moved to make this happen and, in my opinion, extremely unlikely.
