Hi,
I am starting a CELTA next month in London, with the aim of teaching in Vietnam/Western China/Asia ...
But I have no degree.
Will this seriously prevent me from starting a decent CELTA job in Vietnam?
thanks

If you stop to think about it for even a minute you will realise that the link between degrees and capable/motivated teachers is coincidence. What use is a degree in Biology earned 12 years ago to a fledgling EFL teacher?
The degree holders only is a hurdle put in place by immigration for WP purposes. Schools will use your lack of a degree to pay you less.
You can find work in Vietnam without a degree, but will be unable to process a WP. Some places will turn you away but it really depends on supply and demand.
I would worry more about the economic situation and job market in 2009. So far it doesn't seem to have hit, but I think it will and there will be some impact on the market for teachers. Add to this an influx of people coming into TEFL or coming over from a place like Korea using the greener grass argument and it's a very uncertain future.
But - depending on your other options it might work out. Good luck and I hope the above helps. |
