I've got a couple quick questions....

I've been in Taiwan for a year and a half now, so you'd think i'd have some idea of how to answer this, but....

I have a friend from home who's looking to come here for a year, mostly to get a few extra university credits she needs for a masters program back in Canada (she already has one masters, wants to change tracks), but also cause she'd like an adventure and would like to make a little money if possible.

She's already checked with at least one university here that's cool with her taking only a few classes without being enrolled in a program, but she's wondering what visa would be better if she wants to work part time as well, say 10-15 hours a week. She could work full time too, but it's not crucial.

So... if she's enrolled in a university, even if it's only a few classes, does she have to be here on a student visa? and if she is here on a student visa, can she legally work, even part time (ie, less than 14 hours a week, as i understand the defn, of part time to be)? If she comes here and gets a job for less than 14 hours a week, can she still get a work visa on that time amount?

I'm fairly sure she can be here on a work visa and still be in school as that's exactly what a current co-worker of mine is doing, but I wasn't sure about going the student-visa-and-work route.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You know, I've actually been wondering about this myself.

I plan on coming as a full time student to NTU and I'd like a way to recoup at least some of that cost...

Is it possible to work part time as a student?

Is it possible to be a part time student while working full time?

I can't seem to get much of an answer, either...

You cannot work legally on a student visa (not saying people don't do it though), but I don't see any problems with having a working visa and taking a few classes. (aside from getting the 2 schedules to mesh).

Oh, okay. I'm itching to be fluent in Mandarin so just taking a few courses isn't going to cut it, I don't think.

Going to just live in Taiwan without school doesn't seem like such a bad idea, though.. . Money seems good.

Thanks for the answer. I'm going to have to really take some time to think about all this.
