Hello to all in China
I've just started work here in China.
One thing that has come up but is not in my contract is that my employer is insisting that I register with the Canadian Embassy. While it seems like a good idea can anyone think of a reason why it would be bad?
Have most of you done this and , if not, why not?
Thanks for your time. |

For America, registering simply means you get put on their e-mail list, nothing more. However, if you were a flagged criminal or fugitive from justice, I guess it would show up at your embassy?? maybe???For the life of me I wouldn'tknow why it would be of the slightest interest to your school ... when you say employer, you mean school?
They also would have no way of knowing if you have done this or not, ... no way
Strange, Wow, thanx, a new situation I have never seen. I can assure you, place 1 5,000 RMB bet, your embassy would never share anything with your school, or even reply to your school with any kind of information |

Thanks for the reply.
Perhaps I was a little too strong in my wording.
When I say they are insisting they are not shoving it down my throat. They just keep asking about it. I've since done it online and I'm actually glad I did because I would want my embassy to know my contact info.
I don't have a criminal record and I had a criminal clearance certificate by the RCMP completed before I left. I'm also not avoiding the tax man in Canada for any reason so I have nothing to hide.
Perhaps my school is just looking out for me and I didn't even realize it but then again I'm new to the whole process.
Appreciated your comments. |

It is worthwhile to do. For instance, because I was on the e-mailing list i was notified when the Beijing staff sent someone to Zhengzhou (they come and answer small questios, and minor detailslike adding pages), was told that they are opening a new office in Wuhan, etc |

its only a bad idea if you're running from the law in your own country.
on the other hand, if there's a some kind of emergency or disaster in china, your embassy knows where they can probably find you and help you get out. |
