Just thought I would place this post here and see if anyone has any ideas or tips.
Florida certified in the following
Elementary K - 6
Middle Grades Curriculum
Business ED 6 - 12
Anyone know any good teaching positions that will pay in respect to qualifications. Friends at a real expat school would be great if they could help. I have missed the chance for the job fair in Hong Kong and can't really travel to a couple of other countries at the moment for another one. I am hoping for results from 1 or 2 but any help would be appreciated. |

If I changed my question would any of the 61 viewers leave a response? It really would be nice to hear from someone. |

Do you have any experience? It's not clear from your OP. With your quals you are in a position to apply for the NET programme and/or the international schools, but you will (probably) need experience for these. You could check out http://classifiedpost.scmp.com for vacancies and apply for the NET programme direct. Also take a look at the other posts on this forum. |

Both high school and middle school in Florida for experience. Four years of Chinese teaching that don't count for much in real schools. |

Then it sounds like you're well qualified for NET. Why not apply for the positions beginning this September? They usually take on over 100 new teachers each September, and now is the time to get your application in (I think!). Check it out online. |

If I wanted to apply at schools would it be better for me to go up and do so face to face, or would that just be a waste of time. I am only a few hours away from HK really and not afraid to go back and get some of that good food again while I searched. However if you told me that phone and e-mail was wanted by schools instead it would be cheaper to do that of course. |

Changshaman, with very few exceptions, what schools in HK want to see is application forms neatly filled out with the necessary documentation attached. Until such traditional procedures have taken place they will not want to see you or hear you! My advice, as above and/or elsewhere, is to apply directly to the NET programme - that way (in effect) your application goes out to hundreds of schools simultaneously. |

Considering more that 256 clicks have hit your posting and only Marcoregano has replied does not help your intentions. Marcoregano has been in HK for years I believe, take advice from him. If it is any help click this link:

It should tell you whether you meet the criteria to teach at Primary or Secondary level. The next question is whether the EDB will consider you for a teaching role or not as you are North American. But I am assuming there are more than a few Canadians or Americans Teaching in HK schools, despite the fact the education system normally requires non-rhotic speakers. I hope this helps as I am in a waiting phase to hear from the NET scheme administrators and bureaucracy. |

Pls see this post http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=68205 which indicates that Canadians are among the most populous NETs. US teachers are under-represented but have been taken on in fairly large numbers the last couple of years. I don't think there is any particular bias against Yanks. Perhaps the low-ish number is connected with the fact that the US isn't a Commonwealth country - unlike Britain, Canada, Australia and NZ etc. - so historic links via the old colonial system weren't in place following the handover. Just a theory.
As regards people not responding to posts, this is probably partly down to the fact that people keep asking the same questions! And low traffic levels. |

I probably have an interview with an international school and I am going to apply to others. One reason I think an international school would be good is that I have 2 young children and the Int. Schools seem to give free tuition or almost free up to a certain number. The school says that starting salary is about 16,000 and housing allowance is about 15,000 along with the other usual benefits. Our kids are 5 and 3 so their tuition comes out to about 80,000 for the year. What do you think, would NET pay 80,000 better a year all inclusive or should I stay with a job for a year or two at most and get better connected and then Move On Up? |

For NET salary - if you click austeacher's link - then click "Recruitment for Primary NET or "Recruitment for Secondary NET" you will see the salary range. You also get an extra 12950 allowance per month. |

You are right and thanks. I checked it out and it looks to be about the same as the Int School I am looking at in terms of complete package when you figure in the tuition for my 2 children. I was of the opinion that if I could stick it out for a couple years at 1 school then I could make contacts and gain experience that would give me the choice to go where I want to go when the contract was finished at the first school.
I am looking to live out of the city a little anyway and have a little more room for my kids, maybe get into downtown 2 or 3 times a month. So I think it may work.
Any more opinions? |
