Hello!
Before I delve into in-depth research, thought I'd ask the experts here
I have 1 - 1.5 years of experience teaching elementary and middle school kids. Also, an honours English degree, and a TEFL certificate that involved 100 hours of lessons plus I think 30 hours of teaching. I'm a 25 year old Canadian female, if that matters.
I don't like big cities (where "big" = lots of concrete, and oh, 500 000+ inhabitants) - I much prefer more natural areas where I can walk and hike and swim, etc. And I'm flexible as to teaching children or adults. I love both!
So my questions are:
1) Where should I look? What options do I have in terms of types of schools?
2) Can you recommend some specific cities?
3) Is a job search best conducted in person, or is it fairly common to recruit over the internet?
Thanks a million! |

I think Kalimantan or Papua, possibly also Sulawesi would be your best bets. These places do not pay a whole lot, but then again, if you're in a smaller city, you would have to expect that.
Try sending off your CV to some international schools. Most places are already starting the recruitment process, for positions opening in April or June. |

That's enough to get you a pretty good job here at a language/primary/secondary/tertiary/national/national plus/international (ie: the choice is yours) school.

Stay away from Jakarta. Surabaya is being renovated so that it's greener, but it's still very big. Bandung is gigantic and greenish. Semarang is green and 1mil plus. I'd suggest you try Sulawesi (except the restricted areas), Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, Bali, Lombok, a smaller city on Java (like Solo), or Papau.

1) Already answered that.
2) Done
3) Do it from the Internet (at home, not here) if you want a higher salary and better benefits, but less of an idea of what you're getting into. Do it from here to have a better idea but sacrifice the money and benefits a bit. Either way is common, although many places still aren't modern enough to use the Internet.
Oh, I recall a school in Kalimantan that was offering quite a nice salary, so don't be afraid of the "lesser" islands.

Thanks for your help!
Do you have any advice on how to conduct the job search via internet? Are there certain "chain schools" that I can look up, or any other websites where a lot of Indonesian job postings may be found? |

The biggest 'chain school' in Indonesia is EF (English First). They advertise on tefl.com and on this site. You'll also find lots of negative posts but in my experience with them (6 years, 3 schools, 2 countries) each school is only as good/bad as the DoS and owner.
Wherever you apply, it's always a good idea to get in touch with existing staff and get their take on the job and city. |

Aside from missjo's comments, you can look at:
www.jobsdb.com
www.jobstreet.com
monster.com
This website and numerous other ones in order to find work. It's really a matter of which website you like when searching for work.
Aside from certain EF franchises, the only other notorious chain I'm aware of is Singapore School. There are so many schools out there that you'd need to ask the forum about specific ones to find out...

If money is your primary concern , the outskirts would be ideal, as there is not a whole lot to spend money on, and everyday living is usually cheaper.
I live in BSD city. I enjoy my job, which gives me less time to spend money. Which I see as a good thing. |

There are not a whole heap of international or nat plus schools in cities with less than 500,000 people and if they are they are way out in the boondocks. A regional ESL school might be your best bet. |
