Your best bet is likely to get certified in the country where you want to start teaching.

Training in-country offers you a great chance to get your feet wet in the country/culture
while you still have a support system they usually arrange for your housing during the course, airport pickup, and local orientation. Your practice teaching students will really be representative of those youll be working with when you start. You can be sure that your certification will be recognized by local employers, and a training centre can give you invaluable contacts and advice regarding reputable local employers.

European schools (reputable ones) very rarely hire from abroad. They want to see you standing in front of them, looking professional and reliable, before they will take a chance on you. The schools that hire from abroad either want you for your specialist qualifications (which you won't yet have) or because they're dodgy and teachers in the area know better than to work for them.

As for the MA, get started first. Then, you've got a choice: MA TESL/TEFL or Applied Linguistics (or possibly Education, depending where you really want to end up).

By the way, I'm doing what you want to do - I have 12 years of experience, an MA TESL/TEFL, and teach in a European university. So I can speak directly to your situation Smile

If you want to work in the UK, then do the cert there.

about MA programmes, first see if you enjoy teaching, then go for it, you could get one in TEFL.

How did you get the Portuguese visa anyways?
