I posted on the General Europe board, and they suggested I venture to the country-specific boards for some more helpful advice. So here's my story... I'll be graduating in May with my M.A. in Linguistics and a TESOL certificate from my university in the US. I'd really like to get some international teaching experience, and I'm hoping to do so in Europe. The Czech Republic sounds like a good place to work since an American can actually get work legally, so that's why I'm here.
I think I'm far more qualified than many of the Americans who just show up in Prague hoping for a fun international experience. I've already got experience teaching ESL, plus a school year in France teaching English to high school students. I really want to make a career out of teaching, and though I'm not looking for fabulous money (I mean, I'm choosing Europe- I know the pay isn't often great), I don't want to be destitute.
A very helpful member on the General Europe board told me that language schools are really just entry level and not the most impressive on the resume. Any suggestions for where I should be looking? |

Spiral,
Would you mind sharing what you know about the jobs out there for the better qualified and more experienced teacher?

There's nothing out there that I know of that pays enough to allow a reasonable rate of savings - or I'd be living in the CR full time myself!
But for a newbie MA holder just looking for the experience, there are a couple of 'international' schools (private ones, I mean). He/she could also seek out some of those new creches that hire trained English language teachers for small children - it seems to be a growing market in the region.
I mentioned them only because they are among the few decent positions that may hire from abroad based on the MA the OP mentions, not because they offer any substantial benefits over run-of-the-mill private language school teaching. |
