|
|
Im a 26 year old Aussie without a degree and my boyfriend is a 26 year old Brit with a degree. I have a background in HR, his customer service. We live in Southern England. Our plan is to teach for the next 12 months.
Were very flexible geographically, I have traveled through China, Asia, America and Europe. Whereas my boyfriend was far more studious and attained that highly desirable degree.
We have been offered positions with ITTO in Prague and Guadalajara to start in April.
Its been difficult to decide what is the best option for us. Having crunched the numbers, at the conclusion of the four week course in either location having deducted expenses for accommodation, flights, course, food, etc well have about 1,500 pounds in savings between us. Were not fussed about staying in Mexico, would be interested to going further south if need be, but would probably move from Prague to Brno.
So with all of this in mind, are we right in thinking that Guadalajara is our best option?
Or is there somewhere else outside these of places that would be best to consider?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I've found it's kind of hard for Australians and Brits here compared to Americans and Canadians do to the price of flights home. Two round trip tickets to see the family at christmas would cost an American couple a fraction of what flights to England cost. I know Prague is much more expensive than Mexico, but I imagine that the cost of the flight will make up for that.
Keep in mind that it will be harder for you to find a job than for him without that pesky degree (not impossible, but certainly harder).
As for other considerations, you may want to consider the long term value of the ITTO certificate versus a well know well recognized one such as a CELTA if you think you will be in this for more than a couple of years.
But at the end of the day follow your heart. Is your heart calling you to Mexico? |

There is a professional organisation called MEXTESOL www.mextesol.org
I know this may be a long shot, but I think you should consider joining this group. A years membership costs around 200 pesos. But I think it would look good on your resume.
Compared to the many other people looking for a job, to emphasise that you are a member of a professional organisation that is aimed at professional development may help your resume stand out from the rest.
Of course you'll be able to network and know other English teachers in the Guadalajara area! |
