Hi,
I heard and read so many horror stories about working conditions,
pay, etc.
I am part Chinese and white. They treated me very well,
respected me; smiled and everything was great and well
taken care of for me. In fact, the held me by the hand and
always made sure everything was comfortable.
Now, I wonder, after reading everyones story, if it is
because I have chinese blood and they can see it?
Any other part Chinese teachers out there want to share? |

What does this have to do with anything? Are you the forum police? |

obviously my point went over your head.
let me make it more clearly. i find it more useful to question why a poster starts one thread about the worries and stresses of possibly coming to china, then starts another one at the same time telling us how great their time was in china. but thats just me...
now, who are you? |

Honestly the main problem behind the horror stories is usually not one's ethnicity. "White" people get treated better than locals in many situations.
The problem is that most teachers choose to work under "grey" legality, so they must rely on the goodness of their employers' hearts to pay them on time, live up to promises, etc. This is problematic in any country, and especially with smaller businesses with irregular cash flow.
I'm sure someone will pipe up about their job working for a university with a proper visa sucked, but I believe most of the problems stem from the above.
cheers to forum vigilantes

i'm 1/2 chinese and 1/2 white but i guess people's treatment of me isn't generally affected by that because it seems most people, once they take a good look at me, at least, decide fairly firmly that i'm a foreigner. some do double-takes, or stare long and hard, and some even ask if i'm foreign or chinese. but i think that, in general, chinese culture is one in which showing respect and politeness is quite important. but i'm interested in hearing more about your experience as a mixed chinese in china, like how people generally perceive you, and how you feel about your identity here, etc. |
