The State Department hasn't issued a new travel advisory...they've simply renewed the same one they've had up for years.

Quote:
The U.S. State Department has renewed a travel advisory warning Americans about an increase in violence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The alert does not recommend staying away from the country or any particular part of it, but advises American to stay away from prostitution and drug-dealing areas.

It recommends visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas.

Sensible advice...

Although Chiapas is relatively calm and safe, the US State Department has discouraged travel here for events that occurred here over 14 years ago.

Some here think it was politically motivated to justify CIA involvement here in the 90's and a strong Mexican Army presence.

Many Europeans enjoy Chiapas and San Cristobal but the Gringos avoid it.
I originally came here to start a tourist business, but, because of these warnings, my marketing efforts in the US failed. I became an English teacher instead
Very Happy

Sorry that US government warnings defeated your business plans. But even before the 1990s, there were always many more Europeans (and Canadians and Australians) visiting Chiapas (and Oaxaca) than Americans. Unfortunately, many Americans think that a week in Cancn is the best way to enjoy a Mexican vacation!

My parents are currently down that way (they started in Chiapas but are now in Guerrero) and have been doing it with knapsacks on their back and a bus ticket in their hand. They have not had a single issue and have just loved it; in fact they called (while still in Chiapas) and said that they wanted to return with us (we have not yet had the pleasure) in the future.

As we have said before, what is written outside Mexico (and other countries) and what really happens inside the country are often not the same.
