Hello,

Is it perfectly possible to find private classes and freelance teaching work around Bangkok when on a tourist visa, or education visa?

I've just finished a year in Phetchaburi, and now want to study thai in BKK and fund myself with private classes and work through language schools.

I'm going to get a 3 month tourist visa, if possible, extend and then leave once for another to allow me 6 months in BKK. Will private schools hire on a part time basis if i have a tourist visa? I know they SHOULDN'T, but in China, Korea and Russia, if you were part-time freelancing, they didn't much care.

Does anyone have any advice on this? Know anyone working privately on a tourist visa? I want all the info before I get the visa and book my return to BKK.

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to find work at a language school, but don't expect to get privates until you make some contacts in Bangkok first AND/OR you are outgoing, presentable (read handsome/beautiful) and can speak a little Thai.

If by private schools you mean language schools, then Sure. Many, not all, will hire you part time without any visa hassles. THis is very unstable work and could vary a lot week to week and month to month. You could get let go at any time. Expect 350-500/hour for PT work (at a lang. school) in most cases. There are 500+/hour out there but usually require a little more experience and/or the right contacts and timing.

Also, I wouldn't expect to be able to fund yourself in Bangkok. YOu may be able to find enough work to make a living and support yourself this way, BUT there are SO many more distractions in Bangkok to part you of your money. Also expect to have to drop 2 months deposit and 1 month rent in advance for most accomm. That will run you at least 15,000 and probably more (depends where and how you choose to live). Check out 9apartment.com for cheap bangkok rentals.

Make sure you have a couple months salary in the bank (60,000+) at least. Personally I wouldn't want to make that jump without having 100,000+ baht).

Best of luck.

Thanks very much for the detailed info. I really appreciate it.

Are there any others out there who have any input or experience on this topic?

Thanks.

It can be done. I had a friend who was studying at a Thai University, and worked in language schools to fund himself.

But it's very hard work and very tiring, studying, doing homework and then working in the evening and at weekends.
