Anyone know what the job market is like in Khabarovsk for teaching English either privately or through a school? (pay range, employment prospects/no. of schools around)
Arrive early August. |

As far as know, EFL positions in Khabarovsk are pretty few and far between. I have only heard of two private English schools, and they are very, very small. There is no presence like English First or Language Link there (again, as far as I know). However, there might be university work.
I hope someone else can be more help on that front.
I'm pretty sure getting private students would be rather easy in Khabarovsk because there are (again, as far as I've heard) very few native speaking teachers in that neck of the woods.
Why have you chosen Khabarovsk? It's not the cheapest city in Russia (in fact the whole Far East is rather expensive), and employment prospects for English teaching don't seem to be expansive. I'm certainly not trying to dissuade you in any way, just wondering if you have some sort of connection to that particular city.
When/if you get up there, let me know, I'm just down the road!
Good luck! |

P.S. If you've never been to Khabarovsk before, you'll probably like it (especially if you live near the center). It's a relaxed, medium-sized city with friendly people and a decent park near the river. I've been there a number of times and enjoyed it every time. Note: If you're a partier/nightlife type person this is NOT the city for you. The local government despises night clubs, and any entertainment (bars, restaurants, clubs) past 11pm is tough to find. Just a heads up. Another note: It's a humdinger of a winter up there, so keep that in mind! |

Thanks for the reply.
I've looked at university work, but they are only offering work for while I'm there i.e. not providing a work visa. That's the main point actually, a work visa to enable me to stay for up to a year. Private students and money won't be an issue (I hope ) for me while I'm there. Vladivostok is my second option, which will be easier, but my goal is Khb.
Do you know the names of the private schools? Is VIP one of them?
Coming from NZ I've met loads of Eastern Russians, most from Khabar and Vladik and have made some really good friends from that area, so I'd like to see some of them again and exeperience the eastern part of Russia (stayed in Samara as a student).
And yes, I've heard it's expensive... but flatter than Vlad Hate hills.. |

Best of luck. jp |

Hi, just finished two years working in Khabarovsk. It is possibly the party capital of the Russian Far East! Three clubs have opened in the past year and it is home to one of the top three nightclubs in Russia, with international DJs being flown in almost every weekend, as well as a monthly resident from France, Spain, Germany, the UK or the States. Lots of all night parties, in the summer it's a wonderful place for just hanging out and walking around with friends, and in the winter the sun shines almost every day..
Anyway, all that is by the by, it has ten universities, a large student population, and fifteen language schools, none of which have native English speakers. There was one American girl there last year, and I think she may still be there, but no other native teachers that I know about.
Great city, the mosquitoes are vicious in the summer, but otherwise reasonably safe and fun. As for expensive, you can rent a two-room apt for about 18-22k a month, and the cost of living depends on you, although in many ways it does seem comparable with Moscow! |

You wouldn't know the telephone numbers/names of the schools there by chance? I've given up emailing, and have had some success with calling. Whereabouts did you work? |

I spoke to one school in Khabarovsk, ELC, and they were very keen. But they said the salary offered was not enough to get me a work visa. I'm presuming there is now a minimum salary requirement for foreigners getting a work visa in Russia?
It looks like I'll be heading to Vladik instead! |

As far as i've been told the only rule for giving a visa states it has to be enough to live on but does not give an exact amount or minimum. |

Hmmm well I wonder what they were talking about then? Maybe they were keen to have a native speaker, but not to go through the process of getting me there.
Or the wage was so incredibly low that the law in this case could be applied!!! |

To close this thread:
Going to Vladivostok - Khabarovsk couldn't be done, a couple of the schools there big enough to hire a foreigner from abroad didn't have/know how to do the paperwork. |
