|
|
Hello,
I'm a native English speaking Canadian currently teaching in the public school system in Korea through the EPIK program. I've been with this program for three years. I'm also planning to continue my EFL teaching with the NET program in Hong Kong starting in August of 2009. I have two Bachelor's degrees along with a TEFL certificate.
My girlfriend is Filipina. She has a Bachelor's degree in elementary education and is a licenced teacher back in the Philippines having recently passed the state board examination. We both want to live and teach overseas. My girlfriend's English skills are excellent, and I feel that she will make a great teacher.
Here's my question: Are there any Filipinos/Filipinas currently teaching in the NET program through Teach Away? I would love to hear from those who are.
Thank you. |

Unfortunately, probably not, unless they were born in English-speaking countries. Fairly sure the NET programme seeks native English speakers, however I'm not 100% - perhaps one of the NETs on the forum can comment - or try the EdB direct if the application material doesn't make it clear. |

I did meet one lady at the NET induction. She was born in the Philipinnes, but had spent a lot of time in the US and had a US husband. I don't know where her qualifications were from.
For a bit of extra information which may or may not help - there were quite a few Indians with Indian qualifications.
I'm not sure how the EDB judge qualifications.
So it's possible to get work, but rare, if not from the usual native English speaking places. |

How many is that? I think that there are less than 10 Indian nationals on the primary scheme, out of approx. 400 teachers.
But you are correct in your statement that the EdB is not racist with regards to qualified teachers.
Unfortunately for Captain Marvelous's g/f, Pinays in Hong Kong are perceived as being housekeepers. There is a lot of racism directed against them, as well as against Indonesian and Thai women, regardless of occupation.
BTW: what is the "NET program through Teach Away"? |

As far as I recall, about 7 or 8 Indian out of 80 or 90 new NETs. The rest mostly UK, Australia etc. 10 or so of them were of Hong Kong origin. Just 1 Filipino.
I haven't had a chance to see the many returning NETs yet.
I guess it's true what you said about attitudes to Filipinos in HK, so I guess the OP has to consider that. |

Unfortunately, most HKers can only perceive Filipinos/Filipinas as maids or houseboys (at $3,600 HK a month). There are some 30,000-odd such workers presently in HK, and a lower number from Indonesia and Nepal. The term Filipino teacher would strike most if not all HKers as something of an oxymoron.... |

An ELT United Nations
At present, we have in Hong Kong schools more than 900 NETs from most of the English-speaking countries of the world, as well as those that were former British colonies. They come from Australia, Britain, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Kenya, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States of America. Indeed, we are a mini- United Nations of English language teaching. To our students, NETs are a window to the world, act as ambassadors of their home countries and provide them with authentic cultural experience. |

Serious Fun, it's not clear what relevance that quote from the EDB website is supposed to have. It is after all something of a biased source, wouldn't you say? The EDB says a lot of things, many of which appear to be pure fiction. They say for example that NETs are 'agents of change'. Yeah, right.... |

True enough! I should have pointed out that the Philippines were not mentioned in the EdB's list.
Is an 'agent of change' the same thing as a 'window to the world'? What about 'the isolated gwailo'? |

Why would you want to teach in HK ? It seems steeped in racism and snobishness. |

The EDB isn't the issue regarding NET jobs/nationality, but the individual schools (the EDB just approves teachers for the NET scheme, it doesn't allocate teachers to schools). Sadly the vast majority of principals will select a NET primarily on skin colour. A black 3rd generation Brit has far less chance getting a job than a blond-haired Swede, for example. |

Er, no ... because the Swede isn't a native English speaker! Would a blond Brit stand a higher chance than a coloured Brit? My guess is probably, unfortunately, but I'd prefer to think it depended more on quals and experience. I'd certainly hope that in some schools at least it's the latter that matters. Anyone have any facts on this topic? I'd make for an interesting article in Saturday's Education Post... |

yes, i'm also thinking about this issue esp after my NET interview.
The only first hand info I have recieved was from an actual NET recruiter whom I met accidently. Apparently, they are told to limit the intake of non-whites.
Mind you, this is just what i've been told by someone directly involved in recruitment. |
