sorry for the general question post. I'm sure most of my questions have been covered in past posts but its nice to hear it refreshed with the current situation and tailored exactly to me, so I would appreciate any advice...

I would love to come teach in Hong Kong (as many people would im sure). Im 24, canadian, have a Bachelor's in English, and will be getting my CELTA this spring. I have taught in a Korean private school for about a year and a half. Im looking for a new job for the fall. my questions are...

1. Will taking my CELTA improve my chances of finding employment in Hong Kong?
2. Is having a teacher's cert. absolutely critical for the NET scheme?
3. Is it still possible to be hired into the public school system without a techer's cert?
4. What are my best options for looking for employment in Hong Kong? any useful sites, any advice?

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate it

1. Will taking my CELTA improve my chances of finding employment in Hong Kong?

Yes, most probably. They love a certificate, and the NET scheme requires that a teacher do a CELTA/TEFL/TESL course.

2. Is having a teacher's cert. absolutely critical for the NET scheme?

Not a teacher's certification, but the aforementioned certificate will do the trick. Check the EDB website for more info.

3. Is it still possible to be hired into the public school system without a techer's cert?

Yep.

4. What are my best options for looking for employment in Hong Kong? any useful sites, any advice?

www.hkpnets.org
www.scmp.com.hk

Apply directly through the Education Bureau and even contact schools directly if you will be in HK for an interview. Do a search on this forum for NET-related info and ask questions on the hkpnets site (every member of the site is a current NET).

Good luck.

Without a teacher qualification your chances will be greatly reduced, and you will only be considered for primary school - in the NET scheme, that is. You will also be at the bottom of the pay scale - about HK$30 000/month. Schools can hire you directly (not as a NET), and quite a few do. Again, you are likely to get about 30 000, if full-time. Some offer up to 500 an hour for part-time (that's 100 Oz bucks an hr!). My last school did, and couldn't find anyone who was interested. Shocked
