Ive read (very quickly) some of the other posts here on the topic of Brazil and there seems to be a lot of questions about visas. My experience is this - I have entered Brazil twice on student visas and these were quite easy to get. They are good for one year and you can renew them (but it is somewhat of a pain in the ass) Once i got the student visa employment opportunities were plentiful (however not good enough dinheiro to maintain my semi-decadent life style) No school expects you to be "work legally" as it is better for the school and you to pay you under the table.

Regarding work in Brazil - I didnt say it, a Brazilian did and it is a generalization but I believe there is some truth to it "Brazilians do everything slowly, except drive." You can probably easily get private students but this will take time (as it would anywhere) but in Brazil friends and contacts are very important - you will need time to build a network and make contacts - I think to just land here and expect to start making good cash is unrealistic unless of course you have already been hired before coming.

one more thing Re: visas

Ive heard it via a well-connected source that there is going to be another amnesty for illegals in Brazil apparently soon. Dont take my word on it and I would not recommend it as it means letting your visa expire and not being able to leave the country (unless you pay a fine).

When I lived in Brazil, I knew ESL teachers who basically waited out for one of those!
