I am wondering about graduate studies at Chulalingkorn University in the English as International Language department.
Does anyone here know anyone in this program or anything about it?
Thanks

There is no organised/advertised PhD prog for farangs at the langinst, although some kind of placement may be possible.
Some of our younger Thai teachers do PhDs...they take about five years out of the normal timetable and do much less teaching.
There is a well-organised Research section, however.
We had one or two foreigners who did a year or two as part of a doctorate, although they had to pay fees or pay in kind by teaching. I can't remember the set-up. There is no "free" PhD supervision, AFAIK...although staff will be pleased to help/advise you.
Have a look at our website, CULI. there may be some links on there. if not, pm me and I will try to put you in contact with the people dealing.

The uni does run EIL (English as an Int'l Language) programmes. Since my last, I checked the graduate "levels"--it is possible to "do" a PhD in EIL.
However, prerequisites are specific and will include at least a BA in English or an MA TEFL, or similar. If you have a CELTA and a BA in (e.g.) History, that may not be enough to study for the doctorate.
EIL includes elements of TEFL and linguistics research. A core concept is that there are a number of "International Englishes".
It seems that, altho' there are/have been some natives on this course, most candidates are Thais or other asian NNs. Anyway, if you google EIL Chula you could check it all out. PM me for anythg else.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the information. This is exactly the kind of seed of info I was hoping for. I first came across the Chulalongkorn University Phd in EIL when doing a search for grad schools using some areas of interest to me (program evaluation, language planning and testing, etc). In the past I had sent two emails to "[email protected]" stating my interest but was discouraged by a lack of response.
A cursory browse of the website (http://www.eil.grad.chula.ac.th/moodle/) is not flattering for the university however I do recall seeing some highly recognized names in applied linguistics/TESOL giving special lectures there - David Nunan is one I remember seeing earlier.
You answered part of my questions already. It seems that the programs are geared towards locals but were a couple of farang that were there in the past. I guess a further question I have is what kind of positions have graduates been able to find (both Thai and farang students)? Also, what kind of research is being done there? I was unable to find any specifics on the EIL website.
Thanks so much for the info.

There are annual conferences which attract attention.
I am surprised that there was no reply.
In general, Thai MAs and PhDs don't count for much outside of SE Asia, altho chula is rated locally.
If I had chance of higher degree in London or another place, I would prefer based on reputation. but, if u r planning to stay here..........
