Peace Boat is a left-wing organization, but they fight the good fight against the Japanese "system." Their founder, Kiyomi Tsujimoto, is a pretty impressive lady, who founded the organization while she was still a college student at Waseda. She later became a rising star in the Japanese government's opposition coalition, but was soon shot down for bucking the system (admittedly, she had misused staff members salaries to defray campaign expenses --a widely used, and winked at, practice in Japan).

I think you'll find a lot of starry-eyed lefties in the organization. As their name suggests, foremostly, they are peace activists. But they also have been advocates of women's rights, and environmentalist causes, among other typical leftie movements. Ordinarily, I tend towards conservative/libertarian in my own personal bent. But I also have a soft spot in my heart for anyone ever challenging the powers-that-be. Especially in Japan.

I had a roommate who was one of the lucky few chosen for the Peace Boat.

I don't know much about the history of the organization, but he said it was an awesome experience.

Good luck getting on board.
