What does everybody think? I believe NHK are having it both ways - from what I know I cannot list that as a tax paid on the tax form I submit to the tax office and thus get a deduction of any kind, but at the same time the fee is NOT voluntary even if there is no penalty for not paying it.

The point I am trying to make is - if payment to NHK cannot be listed on my tax return then it is not a legitimate tax. It is then a fee levied without real legality and is in essence a voluntary payment. If it is a voluntary payment then I don`t have to lie and say that my tv is broken to stop paying - all I need say is sorry, I don`t want to pay this anymore as it is voluntary and I choose not to volunteer.

Any takes on this?

I play dumb (easy to do), when they come around. Has only happened twice in 1.5 years. I said in English, knowing they can't understand a word, that if they put some good English shows on and real news, than I will pay.

I think you have just answered your own question, cafebleu. What you pay is not a tax, but a fee. Therefore, no deduction is possible.

NHK?

I've lived in three different cities in Japan, never had any people from NHK come to my apartment asking for money and consequently never had to pay. Very Happy Wonder why??????
