I have been offered a job by EF in Changchun, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this school in particular. I have heard all the horror stories about EF and there are a few serious red flags around, but I am undecided overall. The contract is http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7IP97NY0 with all the information and stuff enclosed. Any advice or thoughts on the contract or the school itself? It would be my first time in China, and I don't want to jump into something terrible. Thanks!

How many red flags does it take before you are certain you wouldn't take a job?

When I was 14 I put my finger into a light socket and got knocked across the room. I did it once again when i was seventeen.. Haven't tried it since but I imagine the result would be the same.

When you start off with, "I've read the horror stories BUT"

Does your "BUT" really assume that if you put your finger into the light socket your result will be different than mine?

What is wrong with you?

Oooh.. Oooooh! Ooooh my God. I just downloaded the contract. That is rich indeed!! Ohh.. Hey guys, you HAVE to download and read this contract. 40 hours for 5500 Yuan, for non TEFL and 40 hours for 6500 with TEFL..

Put your "willy" in that light socket my friend.. If you accept this contract you will rue the day..

Do the maths - you can be sure EF have Exclamation

Take it at 160hrs/month, then that 5,500 rate brings in a truly insulting - 34RMB/hour wage

Most China FT's must be horrified at the thought of folk taking these jobs - since it sends a message to other employers - that there are idiots who are actually prepared to come to China and slave for this kind of pittance (we haven't even touched on the subject of paid holiday, weekend/evening work - but if you work for EF you'll certainly be doing so).
If the big-guns can get away with this kind of daylight murder others will always be copying Idea

I've had serious red flags at every job I have worked, ended up loving some of them. Also, the job was more of an opening to travel and see China than gainful employment, I thought it would open those opportunities. I've read that because EF is franchised, some are excellent to work for while others are terrible, I thought perhaps someone had experience with this one in particular and could shed some light on the subject. Thanks for the responses.

5500 for 40 hours... you can/should be making that for 10 hours a week... you want to travel China...fat chance of doing that while working 40 hours a week with 1 day off.. 2 if your lucky (being a sunday and a thursday) earning 5500... get a public/uni gig man... the money might be the same but you will have atleast 4x more time to yourself... you dont seem like a sucker... so dont let them play you like one...

OP EF is a nightmare and you'll have an awful time in China if you work there.

When I came in 1999, it was 1500 RMB a month! I had a little PDA at the time and woulod enter my spending amount each day knowing that the average had to be 50/day. Do you know I actuaklly saved a little because the apartment and its utils were free.

My last job? For 12 hours a week, monthly was 42,600 RMB net. December 2007 netted 73,000 because I took on some extra classes. And the Chinese management? Great!!! At least I saved some of it so I can enjoy retirement.

Somedays you get the bear; somedays the bear gets you.

42,600 RMB a month for 12 hours a week????????? That's about 120 US dollars per hour. You must be doing something right.
