Hello to all,
I am 25, PGCE UK - qualified teacher with one years teaching experience in the middle east.
I have been offered an interview with a school (I won t name it online but if someone can PM me if they know somthing about Italian schools between the regions of Venice and Bologna)
The contract is for 18400 gross which apparently comes in at 14500 after tax
But I read that for the first 2 years, English citizens do not have to pay taxes.
I am Irish so I am wondering if the same applies to me (as an EU citizen).
The salary per month looks like it will be 1700 before tax for 30 hours working per week.
Is this a decent enough salary? I know in UK and Ireland it is quite low for a teacher but I understand there are different costs of living and salary in Italy. I just need to know if I would be quite comfortable on this salary.
I don t speak Italian. Would that be a major issue? I already speak French and I feel this might help me start with Italian.
I would be more than willing to learn in any case.
I would really appreciate any responses! Thanks |

Always work on the basis of net pay in Italy as tax/NI rates are so high. Not sure if the 2 year tax exemption still applies: it may well have been just for teachers on exchange visits anyway. DYOR.
My basic tax rate is 23% plus I pay 17% INPS (think National Insurance), and I only pay that lesser rate as I am already in receipt of a pension from the UK!
Are you working all year for that salary, is it guaranteed, do you work in the summer when schools close? It potentially doesn't sound particularly good, but that depends how much work they are getting from you. Hope they don't load lots of paperwork on top of 30 contact hours, and find out also about potential travelling time.
Remember, Italians on a similar salary are living at home with Mum and Dad, or in an inherited flat, so that's how _they_ survive! |

It seems to be a 10 month renewable contract. 14,500 is what I ll get after tax so I can probably expect to get 1450 per month.
Are rents really high? I am prepared to share. |

Have a look at http://www.casa.it/ for an idea on rents, although you'd do better through local contacts, local media etc. |
