I'd like to know what the pay is currently for teachers in HCMC.

I'm 26, have 5 years work experience in property and finance and a BA in Commerce (Majors - Accounting/Finance) and I want to sign a one year contract.

As far as teaching experience goes, I have only coached an under 10's cricket team at my old school.

I do not have a CELTA, but I am willing to do the course.

What would be the minimum rate I could negotiate and for what types of schools? (Universities, schools or language institutes)

How many hours would I be doing per week? Do I need to remain at the school while I have no classes or am I free to come and go based on my timetable?

If you've read or answered my other topics, you'll know I'm on a serious fact finding mission so any help is greatly appreciated.

I think you should do the CELTA if you are up for it and have the money. All the schools that I contacted required it even though I already had experience. It will also give you a good idea about whether you will actually like teaching.

You should be able to get 16$ p/h minimum and its about 24 hours a week at most places though I know people who are on 20 or 22 hours. I don` have to stay in school if i`m not teaching like I did in Japan but I can`t speak for every school.

Hope that helps a bit - good luck!

Do you think I could get much more by having the CELTA? Would it be better to do it in Vietnam or back home in Australia?

Try checking with a school you are interested in to see if they offer a deal on the course. The school I am working for in Hanoi offers something if you are willing to sign a year long contract. i do not know exactly what because 1) I already have it and 2) I only signed a 6 month contract. I did my cert in Canada. But it might be worthwhle checking out some of the bigger schools to see if they offer it. Best of luck either way.
