Does anyone have any knowledge of the teaching situation in or around Xalapa, Veracruz? I've read/heard good things about the city/area (as far as it seems like it would be an interesting place to live for awhile), but I can't find any info on teaching English there (either searching this site or elsewhere).
I'm currently looking for somewhere to start teaching English and since I genuinely like Mexico and can speak intermediate Spanish, I figure it's a good place to start. I'm just trying to narrow it down to the city now.
Oh, and are there any reputable certification schools in the area (I'm leaning towards CELTA)?
Thanks!
Greg
Edit---
Doh!! I just now see there is a separate "search" for the forum vs. for the rest of the site.
And I also realize it's sometimes spelled Jalapa.
Ok, so there are a lot of threads already...
Well... any NEW info about Xalapa? |

Hi, I lived in Xalapa for a year when I studied abroad and it is a good city to go to if you want to experience real Mexico. Not a lot of foreigners there and it is not a huge city. I liked it, but if I were to go back to Mexico, I would not live in Xalapa, I need something more modern. Um, I did not teach english there but I know people that do/did. One of my friends teaches at Harmon Hall and was trained there. She has been there for years and got trained there (she had no prior ESL experience). I know another girl who lived and taught ESL who also was not trained, she loves Xalapa, but she did not make enough money to stay. Make sure you bring money before you go because you most likely will not earn a lot there. But everything is about who you know and connections anyways so if you are lucky you may hit a good deal. Also you can try contacting El Centro de idiomas en la Universidad Veracruzana and see if they have any jobs you could do. Also, make sure you bring an umbrella because it rains a LOT there. Everyday! Well, good luck! suerte si vas a tener que aprender espaNol porque no hay muchos extranjeros alla. Buena suerte! |
