Well, after EF being compared to McDonalds so many times it seems they have also followed in their footsteps regarding uniform.
Yes!! I have witnessed it! EF now make teachers and DOS wear a really tacky kindergarten style uniform!!! hahaha, my sides are splitting!
Staff are forced to wear khaki trousers and a navy rugby top (yes you read that correctly!) with McEF, sorry EF logo on it! How tacky is that? I mean what teacher can be treated seriously when they are wearing clothes that make them look like a playgroup teacher? Well that's pretty close to EF's style of teaching anyway!
I even heard that one teacher had students calling her 'ahyi' Chinese for cleaner, because the 'ahyi' wears a uniform too!! - what a laughable company!! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Says something about how EF management must regard their teaching staff - if they don't even trust them over their dress.
Shame they can't invest any of that uniform money to bolster their already crap wage levels.
All show and no substance - sends yet another signal why most of us wouldn't want to touch this outfit with a 40ft barge-pole!!!!! |

I worked in the offices of their Shanghai HQ for a spell. The lizards ensconced in that ivory tower love to bring up the fact that EF is a privately owned company with very deep pockets.
Drinking nights, 'teamwork' camps in tropical locales, lavish meals in 5-star hotels all on the company ticket. And at the same time, such nasty treatment of teachers.
Yes, these things are true. Top to bottom, it's a very dysfunctional place. |

I bet the EF rocket-scientist, who thought-up the uniform idea, was rewarded with a huge bonus!!!!!
PS - anybody writing threads on EF - make sure you clearly write EF in the thread title - not McEF - it makes it easier for the search engine to give the real info for those who are researching this company |

EF is a good wake up call for new teachers who have been brainwashed into thinking working for a large "corporation" provides either quality or stability.
A good lesson in life! Getting screwed by EF China (which happens to everyone) is good protection from being screwed later in life at a real job. |

a large "corporation" or as they call themsleves THE LARGEST EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION on this planet could really begin providing some more valuable certificates for its students. many get this piece of paper after finishing a few days course. there're "EF graduates" that've finished 10 levels of the fine EF program and then ended up with 10 "valuable" pieces of paper..although they've improved greatly
cheers and beers to all that avoid this largest can of worms |

How do you know this - have you ever been a student at EF? If so - judging by the level of your English - you could be correct about the standard of teaching found at EF |

Apparently the reason why they implemented uniforms was because teachers weren't adhering to the dress code. The most sickening thing is that with the money that company has, the teachers have to pay for the trousers out of their own pocket! Disgusting!

In this case the kids meant 'cleaner' and were laughing at the teacher who looked like the ayi. |

It is my thought that children....Chinese Children likely laugh at their FT anyway. if u dont want kids laughing at u, then dont teach English to Chinese kids.. but from you post I understood that the teacher "had" the students calling her Ayi...I think the absence of a Ms. ___________ and the substitution of ayi would indicate the level of respect of EF students and an indication at the level of control their staff can maintain. |

Deary me - lets get back to the main point of this thread - which is all about the degree of control EF managers will force on their employees - through the compulsory enforcement of uniform regulations.
....and if that wasn't enough - they're asking the employees to pay for their own trousers!!!!!
Which is a bit baffling, since on one of the EF recruiting pages
http://www.englishfirst.com/trt/cost-of-living-in-china.html
we get these classics ....
Quote: |
By teaching English for EF, you can afford a lifestyle you never thought possible and have a higher standard of living; get a housekeeper, travel, enjoy restaurant meals and wear tailor-made clothes! |
followed by -
Quote: |
Reasonably priced custom made clothes
The cost of having clothes tailor made is very affordable. Once you discover the joys of custom-fit clothing, it may be difficult to go back to the rack! |
So if, as suggested, you become an addict to tailor made clothing while in the service of EF China - how on earth will you cope in your new off the rack EF uniform
Must be bottom of barrel when a pay next to nothing salary company like EF tries to persuade folk that one of the most exciting features of being a China FT - is the opportunity to order tailor made clothing!!!!!
Any of you guys check out the local tailors before you accept a job |

Judging by that last effort- taking an EF writing class wouldn't be a complete waste of time!!!!
And even though it could be costly, look on the bright side - you can now rest assured that the teachers will be well dressed |

which is why I am all for teaching at public schools and against private companies.
They are only in it to make money and will use whatever the "in" organizational psychology technique is.... In my opinion they just try to brainwash their employees into performing at 110% without questioning what they are getting in return.
That stuff only works if the management is not hypocritical (ie preaching one thing then doing differently).
Note* I am biased against private companies because I worked for Vivid English Club in Beijing. Maybe there are some good ones out there? |
