I'm currently living in Taiwan and I'm considering going "across the pond" to work in the Mainland. Do I need to pre-arrange a job or can I show up with a tourist visa and look for work? |

Always good to have a job before showing up but definetly not a problem. Actually gives you an advantage, this way you can do the face to face interviews and check the place out for yourself, and most importantly talk to the other teachers that are already there. |

Try to arrange for 3 or 4 jobs in advance. By this I mean contact schools in the area in which you wish to teach. Tell them you are interested in teaching at their school and would like to visit first. Then you will be able to make an itenerary and find a school you feel comfortable with. |

Keep in mind you will only have 30 days to find a job and get medical visa etc...although it could be done. A visa run could be a hassle unless you are in the south. You could find something using the net---phone the school and ask for teachers e-mails. Ask a LOT of questions. Everyone will be hiring for Feb. |

I wouldn't worry about finding a job before you come, unless you're hard up for cash. Check out the town and the job market--it shouldn't take more than a few days to meet some expats in the large cities. It's always best to talk to foreign teachers first, since they'll most likely be forthcoming about the schools flaws. Early February will be a good time to be here, since Chinese New Year is January 22nd. |
