Hi,
I'm going to do a month long CELTA course in the summer with a view to getting a teaching job in SE or NE Asia in September. I have college qualifications but no degree.
I originally wanted to work in South Korea, but have been told that you need a degree to get a visa there. I don't really want to go to China so I was wondering what the next best option is money wise. I'd like to go to the Philippines or Indonesia but don't want to pay for the course and not be able to get a job. What are my chances and what kind of wage should I expect?
I'd like to make enough money to do a little travelling from time to time but I'm not really expecting to save much. Can anyone suggest the best countries in Asia for my level of experience?
Thanks in advance! |

Do you have life experience or are you straight out of school?
You could get a job, but you'll probably be at the bottom of the ladder. Might try Thailand or Vietnam. As far as wages, you'll make enough to live and because of costs of living, you could live pretty well, if you stay within a budget. |

I've been working for the past 10 years and am studying the 1st year of a degree at the moment. I even have a bit of experience of teaching music on a one to one basis, although not in an institution.
I've spent quite a lot of time in Thailand before, and Vietnam too. Thailand is an option but I wouldn't really like to live in Vietnam.
Cheers for the advice,
Anyone else have any suggestions? Is Jakarta ok to get a job without a degree? What kind of wage should I expect? |

I know that EF in Jakarta hires people without degrees. I had a friend work there for a year. He said it was OK, though he didn't really like the city. |

EF in Jakarta is a great place to work if you like working and living in a crowded busy city. EF does not always insist you need a degree but qualifications are more than useful as is experience.
PM me if you want more information. |

Hi carnival_of_sorts.
It is possible to find teaching work in Vietnam and Thailand without the degree but this will mean teaching illegally and as a result you will be competing for jobs with other backpackers. Teaching illegally in Thailand or Vietnam means earning a much lower rate of pay, potentially having difficulties getting your pay and always having to look over your shoulder for the immigration officials.
There is the possibility of teaching private lessons but means needing to do a fresh tourist visa run every few months.
Hope it helps!

Is teaching English something you think you'll want to do as a career? Is it something you might want to eventually do in your home country should you decide to return there?
A degree will make you more marketable and there are more and more countries requiring you to have a four-year degree just to get a work visa. Why not combine the two: http://tefldegreecourse.com/, http://www.teflintl.com/tesol_bachelor_degree.htm and http://www.onlineteflcourse.com/online-tesol-bsclt-about.shtml? |

Jakarta is a horrible place to live...all concrete, no parks, nothing to do, probably have to work most Saturdays. I think the Father is a DOS for EF Swara Group...beware! |

Which probably explains why so many people in Jakarta take off to Bandung for the weekend! |

Do not AUTOMATICALLY discount teaching positions in China.
There are other qualifications, for some employers, beyond a Bachelor.
Stay positive and monitor the Davescafe job forums. |
